Well, it looks like your Mom has the last laugh. Fort DeSoto is in Pinellas County. Your on the WRONG coast to get any waves. talk Mom into vacationing on the east coast, and you might have half a chance.
Sorry little buddy, the Gulf of Mexico is the wrong place, although there are a good group of hard core, VERY PATIENT surfers who wait for those rare surfable days there.
“It’s no myth. The Gulf does produce some of the finest waves in Florida — in terms of quality. Quantity? Well, that’s a different story. Gulf Coasters endure the longest flat spells, the most onshore days and the longest drives to surf in all the Sunshine State.” surfline.com

Oh man! I surfed the internet to find your answer and would say, dream on! That area of Florida has kayaking and tons of other activities, but even swimming in some spots sounds not recommended. (Strong currents). I learned how to surf by watching movies, watching the pattern of waves, and learning to boogie board first. You can also look online about HOW waves break; the sand or coral below caused the weight of the water to fall. Interesting. As you time the waves, every 10-11 seconds, (it all depends on which beach and how the weather is), you look for it to break. If you do swim there, you can try to jump into the crashing wave and body-surf it. That is good practice.

Freedy Really answered your question…. NOT
After doing a little reshearch it looks like Fort Desoto doesn’t have big enough waves to surf.
