Pipe (Bonzai Pipeline) is a wave located on the North Shore of the island of Oahu. Honolulu and the popular Waikiki Beach are located on the South side of the island.
Pipe is a very dangerous and powerful wave that breaks at 3 spots with the main one over *very* shallow reef.
“While there are stories of undocumented attempts to surf it, Californian Phil Edwards is noted as the first to ride it successfully in 1961. Filmmaker Bruce Brown captured the wave from shore, and by the time Edwards was back in his car, three other guys were out.” – Surfline
Nearly a dozen people have died there. In 2005, Malik Joyeux died after hitting getting caught under the lip of a wave. It’s not clear exactly what happened but he was knocked unconscious and had a head laceration. Story and photos: http://www.surfline.com/surfnews/article...
The following movies may interest you: Step Into Liquid, Riding Giants, and Blue Crush. You can find those and other surfing movies at your local public library for free.
You can watch the annual Pipe Masters surfing contest live via webcast each December by visiting: http://www.triplecrownofsurfing.com/

I’ve surf there a few times when I visit Oahu. It’s on the North shore of Oahu off of Ehukai Beach Park. From experience it’s the sickest ride. One of the best out there. If you’re beginning I wouldn’t recommend going there, maybe as a spectator. But if you want to learn, Waikiki is the best place. Now if you want the whole history of Surfing and the Banzai Pipeline, go visit wikipedia and it’ll tell everything you want to know about it. Righteous

Pipeline is on the North Shore, not in Honolulu. Much of the early history of Hawaiian surfing, particularly the Waikiki area, can be found online or at the Bishop Museum near Pearl Harbor. As for the history of Pipeline, the movie Pipeline Masters has a great deal of it. On a side note, not many surfed Pipeline on big days before the early 1960s as the boards couldn’t handle it well.
