What Is The Easiest Kind Of Board To Learn How To Surf?

I would recommend a soft top long board for a beginner. They are very buoyant so it is easy to get up, and the top is “cushion” so it won’t hurt if you fall/slip on it. Once you get better, try a shortboard which is good for doing tricks and turns, although they are more difficult to stand up on if you are new to the sport. Another board, a fish is a sort of hybrid between a longboard and shortboard. Fun for small days when the waves aren’t too powerful.

The easiest kind of board to learn on is a soft top board. However, I am not saying that you should go out and buy your self a soft top board.
Take some lessons. They are the best way to learn how to surf. They provide a longbaord or minimal or soft top board for you so you can learn how to surf. They also keep safer and less danger to other people in the water with you. The surf instructors will teach you everything you need to know and the proper surf etiquette. They will get you surfing in no time.
When you acctually go out to buy a board (which should be after you learn how to surf) you should always go to the surf shop. They will help you find the right size and kind of board for you and your ability.

I would definitely suggest a longboard. I learned to surf on a 9′0″ BIC fiberglass longboard, and found it extremely easy to find my balance and ride waves within the first couple of days. While most surf schools use soft top longboards to teach their students to surf, I prefer a fiberglass board to learn on. The buoyancy of the soft boards makes the ride less stable to my feel, and it is more difficult to find the right balance. Fiberglass boards are more fine-tuned for serious riders and have a much better feel. They are more expensive, so I would definitely suggest you rent one first and get a day of lessons from a qualified instructor. After you get yourself acquainted with the sport, then you can go out and find yourself a nice one. A new 9′0″ fiberglass longboard that would be suitable for a novice should run you anywhere from $500 to $1000, but you can pick up some nice used boards for a little under $300 if you know where to look. Otherwise, do what I did: find a good friend to surf with who owns several boards, and borrow one.
